The Art-Ring: Community Art From Kaarela exhibition is the culmination of five community arts projects created in Kaarela in 2018. The exhibition includes textile-book-art, sound art, sculpture, video, installation, performanceand conceptual art. At the exhibition preview the artist Nella Keskisarja’s performative work “Ostarin Peijaiset” (The Mall’s Feast) invites the residents of Kaarela to feast and enjoy and celebrate the shared journey of her 3-year project “Ostari Tarinoi” (The Tales of the Mall). The Helsinki Artists’ Association has been creating community-based art projects in Kaarela, 2016-2018, as a part of The Helsinki Model under the name The Art-Ring project (Taidekehä-hanke). Over this period the Art-Ring project has produced numerous community-based artworks, projects, workshops and events led by professional artists. Its aim has been to build interaction through art and produce varied community-based artworks together with the residents of Kaarela. We have wanted to showcase the voices of locals, positively add to the local environment and enhance the feeling of safety in the area. The Art-Ring project would like to thank the Kaarela inhabitants, local services and associations for their amazing and innovative collaboration over the years. The Art-Ring project will, in the future, continue in the form of individual projects and possibly as a part of the OmaStadi.hel.fi platform.
